Book Weekly tees off 2008 Verizon Heritage

Defending champion Boo Weekly got the 2008 Verizon Heritage golf tournament underway this week by launching a shot into the Calibogue Sound as canons fired around him in the tournament’s traditional opening ceremony.

The 2008 Verizon Heritage event will get off to leisurely start as golf pros warm up on Tuesday, and then take part in a pro-am event on Wednesday before getting stuck into the tournament proper on Thursday.

The festivities at the Harbour Town Golf Links were a far cry from the tense, almost morbid, atmosphere at Augusta National last week where golf’s top players struggled to come to terms with course conditions and weather at the 2008 US Masters.

Despite the relaxed atmosphere, the 2008 Verizon Heritage golf tournament is serious business for both local charities and the players in the PGA. Over $17 million has been generated for local charities in the past, while the winner leaves with a cheque for over $900,000.

South African Ernie Els is priced as 12/1 favourite to win the event by William Hill.
