2007 Verizon Heritage Winner: Boo Weekley
Thomas Brent “Boo” Weekley was born in Milton, Florida on July 23, 1973. His nickname “Boo” comes from cartoon character Yogi Bear’s sidekick, Boo-Boo Bear.
The current tournament champion turned professional in 1997 and played on mini-tours until 2002, when he qualified for the PGA Tour.
Boo Weekley had a slow start to his professional career. After making the cut in only five of 24 events, he lost his Tour card. He then played the Nationwide Tour from 2003 to 2006, when he finished high enough to regain his PGA Tour card.
His first PGA Tour victory came in April at the 2007 Verizon Heritage, where he beat Ernie Els by one shot. Victory didn’t come easy though, and Weekley had to chip in on the final two holes to keep Els at bay. This tournament victory earned him a winner’s cheque of $972 000.
Just as importantly, it earned him a two-year exemption on the PGA Tour, as well as entry into several invitational tournaments in 2007, namely the Players Championship, PGA Championship and the World Golf Championship-Bridgestone Invitational.
For 2008, Boo Weekley has invitations to the 2008 Mercedes Championships in Kapalua, Maui, Hawaii and the Masters Tournament.
After being named the 2007 Verizon Heritage Champion, Boo Weekley reached a career-high ranking of 55. Later in 2007, he entered the top 50 of the rankings, and by October 2007 he reached a world ranking of 35.
As of October 2007, Boo Weekley has played in 28 events, and made 19 cuts. His scoring average is 70.20 and he is ranked 38th in driving distance.
He played in three of the Major championships in 2007. He finished tied 26th at the US Open, tied 35th at the British Open and tied 9th at the PGA Championship.
