Verizon Heritage Golf Tournament

HILTON HEAD, SC - APRIL 16: Jerry Kelly hits out of the rough during the final round of the Verizon Heritage on April 16, 2007 at Harbour Town Golf Links in Hilton Head, South Carolina. Due to high winds the day before that suspended play, the final round was rescheduled for a Monday morning finish. (Photo by Streeter Lecka/Getty Images)Following the success of last year’s event, we expect an even better show at the  Verizon Heritage golf tournament this year, known in the mid-Nineties as the MCI Classic. The tournament will be held at the Harbour Town Golf Links in South Carolina.

Each year the Verizon Heritage attracts one of the strongest fields of internationally ranked players on the PGA Tour. These players battle it out for the championship, not to mention a healthy winner’s cheque. Importantly, these golfers also contribute to the success of the tournament in terms of charity. The Verizon Heritage helps thousands of people through its significant donations.

Verizon Heritage history is steeped in rich tradition, and the Verizon Heritage course is widely regarded as one of the most popular on the PGA Tour FedEx Cup.

2009 Verizon Heritage winner Brian Gay claimed his second PGA Tour win when he defeated Briny Baird and Luke Donald. Gay also achieved the highest victory margin in a PGA Tour event since Phil Mickelson’s win at the Bellsouth Classic in 2006 as Luke Donald and Briny Baird finished far behind in second places. The victory earned him $1 million in prize money and a place in the 2010 US Mastes Golf Tournament.

Boo Weekely was the 2008 Verizon Heritage winner, and became only the  third player to successfull defend their titles at the event, the other players being Davis Love III (5 wins) and the late Payne Stewart (2 wins). Who will forget Weekley’s dramatic victory over Ernie Els in 2007, where the winner was only established on the very last hole? It’s rare that a golf tournament is won with a chip-in on the 18th. In 2007, the tournament was won as a result of chip-ins on the last TWO holes! Visit our 2007 Verizon Heritage page for more information about last year’s event and winner.
